The beauty, ease, and versatility of the great Samuel Ramey is just astounding. Spending tonight listening to a recital he gave in 1988. His coloratura is absurd. His voice is entirely even across the range without blemish. It is almost hard to listen to...

Don't stand there too long, mate. Those tracks are active!
Looking fancy!
Was this before or after you recorded the Time Warp cover?
Nice!

Last night I watched "Der Kaiser von Atlantis" from the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. The last time I saw this piece was with Lost and Found back in Perth with an all-star Australian cast under the direction of Thomas de Mallet Burgess. That production was staged in a synagogue, testament to the composer and librettist, Viktor Ullman and Peter Kien, who wrote this opera whilst prisoners in a German concentration camp (Theresienstadt). Ullman and Kien later died in Auschwitz and never saw their work performed.
The Deutsche Oper's production, conceived with COVID-safety protocols, was cerebral, theatrical, intelligent, incredibly moving, and exceedingly well-sung. I don't often recommend virtual content, but this piece translated very well to the screen and deserves to be seen. You could do far worse as an introduction to this incisively satirical work. As a side note, the Loudspeaker stole the show for me.

A fascinating piece....I saw a wonderful production of it at Cincinnati Opera years ago...

#worldoperaday seems an appropriate occasion to mention that I'm currently singing the role of Raimondo in an upcoming production of Lucia di Lammermoor with @unt_opera. Although audiences are effectively not allowed (limited by number and association), a high-quality streaming event is going to happen on or around November 21. More details to come.

Flashback Friday: we recently wrapped on the new opera "Stone Soup" with @fortworthopera which we performed using green screens. Interestingly, this wasn't my green screen debut. Flashback to 2011. Before pursuing opera, @alexkendallrobson and I formed the regional touring theatre company, @felttiptheatre. As part of the "National Broadband Network Geeks in Residence" exhibition with the @auscouncilarts , we commissioned a number of local playwrights to devise a piece of theatre that would use green screens and high-speed internet to digitally place actors in multiple locations across Australia side by side, live, in performance. Unfortunately, ill-timed power outages laid waste to the performance as planned, and instead, Alex and I gave a rendition of a semi-improvised piece we coined "Waiting for... a train", using chromakey technology to place us on a moving train. Art will persist.
